Lawson Susanne Mayfield, 18, passed away Sept. 23, 2009, in Tallahassee after a brief illness. Lawson was an avid equestrian and was due to begin her university education at University of Central Florida in the spring semester and planned to study abroad in Spain. Lawson was an accomplished equestrian achieving national recognition thanks to countless hours she spent riding with her trainer and close friend, Andrea Duffy. Lawson qualified for prestigious competitions, including the Devon Horseshow, the Pennsylvania National Horseshow and the Washington International Horseshow as a Junior Hunter and High Junior Jumper. Lawson was also proud to be a member of Live Oak Hounds.
As part of her memorial service, Lawson's parents requested donations be given in lieu of flowers to both the US Equestrian Team Foundation and the Equestrian Club at UCF. As a result of this gracious act, riders on the UCF's huntseat team are able to show in Lawson's name under the Lawson Mayfield Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship will help riders on the UCF's huntseat team with showing fees for a given semester.
